100 Days of Prints and Patterns by Veronica Galbraith | Pitter Pattern

I wanted to share with you today a great creative project I’ve joined this month, The 100 Day Project, which is a yearly, free, global art project that anyone can participate in.

Basically, you choose an action you want to do for 100 days and every day you share an image of your results with the world, on Instagram!

This year’s project started on April 4th, 2017 and runs for 100 days up to and including July 12th, 2017.

I was quite reluctant to join at first… I felt it could end up being a lot of pressure. I knew that if I started I’d find it amazingly infuriating if I missed a day for one reason or another. I like to finish what I start and finish well.

I, like many freelance creatives out there I suspect, always find myself doing everything for the business except finding time to actually sit down and be creative: doodle, paint, draw… So I thought this was the perfect opportunity to force myself to do some designing every single day.

It probably won’t be a surprise to anyone that I decided to do patterns for 100 days (#100daysofprintsandpatterns), and on day 17 I can say that I couldn’t be happier about having joined the project. It really has invigorated my creative drive. And a well-known phenomenon is happening: instead of running out of ideas, my brain is constantly creating more… The more you put out, the more wants to come out!

Looking at the feed for #100dayproject on Instagram you can see what an amazing variety of artistic enterprises people have chosen, from photography, sewing, stamp making, printmaking, lettering, to collaging and all sorts of crafts…

So if you need a little kick up your bottom and an opportunity to get creative, enrol on next year’s 100 Day Project. Or even better, go and find yourself another similar creative challenge that you can start now, there are plenty around and now is always the best time. I promise you it will make you feel good and get better at whatever you choose to do.

The project is run by Elle Luna, a painter, designer and writer, and Lindsay Jean Thomson, a writer and the co-founder of Women Catalysts.

Have you taken part in any of the 100 Day Project challenges? If so please share with us what you took on!

I am a designer, originally from Colombia and now living permanently in Cornwall, UK. I graduated in Product Design but since then have mostly worked in graphics for print and web. A few years ago I decided to specialise in Surface Pattern Design and I'm loving it!

No, this isn’t what I do. I mean I draw little backgrounds for my stuff, but I don’t know much about making a repeat etc. I found your blog link on LinkedIn, and I really like your work. It stands out from the usual array of patterns out there. You have a unique look that has to do with the way you do shapes and the colors you choose, I love it! I subscribed because looking at all of it gives me inspiration.

    • Aww Leslie that’s so sweet! It makes me very happy to know that, as finding your own unique style is one of the main struggles for surface pattern designers… 😊 Also, I’m glad the blog can provide you with inspiration, that’s the main idea! Keep in touch… 🙂
