Hello lovely pattern lover. How is your end of the year going? Are you ready for Christmas? I’m definitely not! I’ve been running like a headless chicken the last few weeks (months?), getting my shop, Republic of Happy, ready for the festive season. Who would have thought that running a product-based business needed so much planning!

The other day I got contacted by Wouter from Studio Ludens. He and his partner Alex are the creators of Repper, a web app to create patterns on the fly. He wanted some feedback on the app, and to do some research on how it would fit into the workflow of a surface pattern designer. I fell in love with the app in about 5 minutes…

One of my all time favourites is Pantone Studio, an iOS app for colour inspiration and management, created by Pantone, a provider of professional colour standards and digital solutions under a universal language.

I remember a few years ago when I started designing patterns… It was a fairly steep learning curve to learn all the pattern making techniques. I wished then that we, budding surface pattern designers, had more affordable resources to help us take those first steps, design patterns easily and see results a bit quicker.

Times have changed and surface pattern design has become more popular, thus more and more resources are being created that help us streamline the pattern design process, e.g. the pattern maker feature in Adobe Illustrator. In this post, I’ll share with you some of these resources…
